My story

I started my food journey back in 2014, when I did my first professional cookery course. I had always been a huge lover of food, with my parents being exceptional cooks, but the course I took changed my life and transformed my love of cooking into an obsession. From then, I strived to get as much experience as possible; from working for events companies, to professional kitchens, and finally private catering. I have catered weddings, worked in pubs, restaurants and bars both as part of a team and individually, but working for individual families, catering their holidays, parties and special occasions, is where I discovered my passion for more personal cooking. Although I learnt so much working in the professional environment, especially refining my skills, working for individuals on a more personal level made me work harder at creating and adapting my own recipes. In 2015, I started my Instagram account documenting my food and recipes, and although life has taken me down various different paths, cooking will always have a special place in my heart.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 11 years old. It took me a few years but its now well controlled with insulin injections and regular testing. This is possibly when my parents decided to teach me to cook properly. Being a young diabetic, I struggled with not knowing how much sugar or carbohydrates were in certain foods, or “carb counting”, which made managing it very difficult. However the more I cooked with my family, the more I began to recognise and count my carbohydrates better, both in foods that we cooked and foods that we didn’t. Just as we were all getting used to the diabetes, I was diagnosed with coeliac disease four years later.

Coeliac disease is very common in people with autoimmune diseases and because of this, is regularly tested in these people. I was initially flagged when I was 14 but further investigations concluded with a negative result. However only a year later, the same issue flagged and this time it was confirmed. The rest of my family were tested and turns out my father and sister were also coeliacs. Thus the entire family became gluten free! Luckily since our diagnosis, the gluten free boom has occurred, making gluten free items cheaper and easier to come by. I’m not saying its cheap or easy, because that would be a straight up lie, but its definitely better than it used to be. But this is when I found my little niche!

A really fun challenge I like to set myself is to find an amazing "gluten-ous" recipe and adapt it to make it gluten free! I’ve done this with recipes from The Great British Bake Off, from some of my favourite chefs and with random recipes I come across online. Not only is this fun, but I hope it inspires people going through similar lifestyle transformations to not give up hope! Gluten free does not mean flavour free.

All of my recipes are 100% gluten free, and I try my best to get as many other allergen-free recipes in there as well; from lactose free, to F.O.D.M.A.P friendly foods, vegetarian and vegan recipes. All are welcome… So sit back, scroll and enjoy. I hope to inspire some of you to pick up that spoon and cook something awesome!
